Japanese food lovers in Perth are still dealing with the shock closure of the CBD’s beloved Japanese restaurant, Restaurant Jun. The restaurant announced it was closing last month via social media, citing difficult business conditions. “The decision was not easy to make, but due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 and staffing shortages, we had to make this difficult call,” the staff said via Instagram. “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your long-time support and loyalty.” Arigato gozimashita Tadashi-san for all the yakitori, onigiri, and secret ramen specialties.
Analiese Gregory comes to town
Tasmania – via Wales, the Netherlands and China – comes to Western Australia when chef Analiese Gregory (ex Quay, Ledbury, Franklin) joins the Hearth team this month . On Tuesday, October 25 and Wednesday, October 26, Gregory and Hearth Sous Chef Brian Cole and Ritz-Carlton Executive Chef Alberto Cuzzit team up to create a five-course menu that combines Gregory’s global experience with pristine WA produce. To drink are the wines of Margaret River-based gun winemaker Jo Perry of Dormilona. Tickets are $329 (including matching wines) and are available online.
Not your grandmother’s tea
Gregory isn’t the only Eastern States chef cooking at a Perth hotel this month. On Saturday 22nd October, QT Perth will host Sydney-based pastry chef Anna Polyviou for QTea: a complete high tea featuring sweet and savory dishes reimagined by Polyviou. Among the classic dishes, the pink mohawk chef will focus on: caramel slices, raspberry lamingtons and chicken roll. After high tea, Polyviou will DJ and spin the tunes at the rooftop bar. Tickets for QTea with Polyviou start at $99 and are available online.
Tasting in Subiaco
The 12th edition of Unwined returns to Subiaco Market Square Park on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October. With more than 50 wineries, distilleries, breweries, and cider houses — plus a handful of food vendors — the festival transforms the park into something of a pop-up wine country. A variety of ticket options are available with individual producer tastings also available. Pre-sale tickets start from $35 (tickets are more at the door) and are available online.
A new burger option for Mount Hawthorn
Ahead of next week’s opening of neighborhood wine bar Sonny’s, Mount Hawthorn recently hosted outpost number two of burger joint Fremantle HomeRun. The Oxford Street shop is open seven days a week and, like the original Freo, offers the same baseball-themed menu of burgers, fried chicken and more desserts.
