The General Department of Prisons (GDP) is authorizing the organization of religious ceremonies during the Pchum Ben festival for inmates across the country this year, while also allowing families and relatives to visit inmates in low-risk areas. transmission of Covid-19.

In a letter dated October 2, GDP Director General Chhem Savuth informed directors of correctional centers and prisons across the country that inmates were allowed to attend religious ceremonies during the festival within the prison by following strict sanitary measures and meeting only to hold ceremonies in small groups.

He also said relatives of detainees in areas considered to be at low risk of Covid-19 transmission could visit them during the festival.

For prisons and correctional centers in areas at high risk for Covid-19, direct visits are not yet allowed, but relatives are allowed to bring food to inmates by dropping it off with prison guards.

Kampong Thom Provincial Prison Director Tam Vey told the Post on October 3 that he followed the instructions in allowing families and relatives to visit inmates as she is in a light transmission area.

“No inmate in my prison has contracted the disease to date. We only allow parents who have been fully vaccinated to visit. They come in and see their family members one by one, ”he said.

Vey said he was still in consultation with the relevant authorities on how to organize the Pchum Ben ceremonies which are typically held inside the prison each year.

“We just received these instructions. We will discuss this further with health officials and monks and discuss how many monks can be allowed to enter the prison for a small ceremony while respecting all sanitary measures, ”he said.
