Great Bolton Cake Off Schools 2022 competition designs revealed

Two Bolton boys felt royal after winning the Great Bolton Cake Off Schools Competition 2022.

Just under 700 children took part in a competition set up by Bolton Council with two competitions running asking children to design a cake based on the Jubilee theme and the second for the best cupcake recipe.

Tommy Grimshaw, 9, won the cake design competition while Raees Adam, 15, won the best cupcake recipe.

Throughout the contest, two internationally acclaimed creative cake makers – Rosie Cake Diva and Kaykes were on hand with the best tips and tricks and acted as head judges.

Since the two winners were announced, both have been invited to the Bolton Food and Drink Festival where their ideas have come to life in the form of a huge cake and fantastic cupcakes.

Speaking about the competition, Rosie Dummer, Cake Diva, said: “We went around all the schools in Bolton and talked to the kids and gave them inspiration and we had this whole series of sessions where we talked about the jubilee, the inspiration, how to make the cakes and we persuaded the children.

“Just under 700 children were involved in designing a cake for the Queen’s Jubilee and then Kay was going to do it and so Tommy’s was amazing.

“It took several sessions for Kay and myself to narrow it down, but we both loved Tommy’s and it was also about the thought process and Tommy put so much into it.

“The corgi, the crown, everything.

“We just wanted to get the kids thinking about a design that would work like a cake but also make people say oh this is what it is and Kay’s cake is just awesome, great team.

“Tommy designed the cake, won the contest, and Kay made the cake that’s here today.”

Speaking about winning the cake competition, Tommy Grimshaw, 9, from Spindlepoint Primary School, said: “It was really exciting, I decided to do my drawing because the Corgi is the dog of the queen and it was jubilee week.”

Raees Adam, 15, said: “It was really exciting to win the competition, and it was very surprising because I didn’t think with all the entries I would win, it’s a really exciting feeling. ”

As winning designers, the two boys won a Samsung tablet and will see their entry into the competition in a limited-edition cookbook.
