Faith Temple Hosts MLK Day Celebration


A tradition of Rapid City’s Reverend Martin Luther King Day continues in Rapid City Monday with the annual MLK Day celebration hosted by Faith Temple Church. They have been hosting this event for over 20 years now. And it was back Monday at the Holiday Inn-Rushmore Plaza. It is commemorated on the third Monday in January each year to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday, which is actually January 15. Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender spoke at Monday’s celebration. For Allender and Bishop Troy Carr, this day has a special meaning.

Bishop Carr says, “It means a day of remembrance. It means that one day I can be proud of my culture, of the accomplishments of not only Dr. Martin Luther King, but also those of other members of the African-American community and what they have done to make America great.

Mayor Allender said, “Martin Luther King Day signifies recognition of a more tumultuous time in our community, in our country and Dr. King, who has been a leader in the movement to make things better throughout this era. civil rights. And for me, I think that’s a bit of hope, that no matter how bad it looks here, someone, an individual, can make a huge difference.

Bishop Carr says Dr King’s message was one of love, peace, non-violence and unity. He said it is a day for coming together and for all of us to reconcile our differences.
