Hindus in Bangladesh today celebrate Mahalaya, the auspicious occasion that heralds the arrival of the goddess Durga.

Considered a ceremonial invocation of Durga, Mahalaya is observed a week before Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community in Bangalee.

Hindus believe that the earth is preparing and welcoming the coming of the goddess and her children, through the celebrations.

Durga Puja will start on October 11.

In Mahalaya, the Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee organized special programs at Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka.

On this day, Hindus remember and pay homage to their deceased ancestors by performing a puja and offering the Brahmins clothes, food and candy in their name.
